Gettysburg, PA is the site of the American Civil War Battle of Gettysburg and Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. Investors have proposed creating a “resort casino” (600 slot machines and 50-65 table games) to be located at the Eisenhower Inn and Conference Center 1/2 mile from the boundary of the Gettysburg National Military Park, on Bus. Rt. 15, now the nationally designated scenic byway Journey through Hallowed Ground, which runs from Monticello, Va to Gettysburg, PA.

It is a travesty that a casino would consider any location near those hallowed grounds where so many of our countrymen sacrificed their lives.
There are plenty of other areas that would make better sense.

Have been visiting Gettysburg Pa. since 1992. I am a student of the Civil War and love studying the battle. I am a member of the Gettysburg Foundation and have been sending money to that organization to help fund such projects as burying the power lines along the Emmitsburg Rd. and helping to the new Museum. I am also a member of the CWPT and for years have sent money to buy vital battlefield land. Preserving our historic sites is something I am passionate about. A decision to allow a casino to be allowed to operate 1/2 mile from the Park Boundary is very disturbing. I beseech the powers to be to reject this proposal. A concerned American.

A casino in Gettysburg will bring people to the town for the wrong reason. The town and battlefield are about American history. If somebody wants to gamble, that’s fine, but if that’s why they went to Gettysburg, I feel sorry for them.
I’ve lived in Indiana all my life and I’ve been to Gettysburg five times. I won’t go again if you ruin it with some tacky casino.

A casino does not belong anywhere near Gettysburg. The very idea is appalling.

I do not gamble and would not be visiting a casino. Gettysburg does not need a casino….

Gettysburg is our dearest ground. It is the battle that helped bring an end to the War thereby keeping our Nation intact. It is therefore sacred & should be protected from those who would desecrate it and the thousands of American soldiers, Union & Confederate who fought and died there. ERIN GO BRAUGH!

My family travels to Gettysburg every year because of the history and beauty. The current commercialism of the battle and the sanctity of those lost is more than enough already. A casino and gambling would be a desecration to something heal sacred by many nationwide.
Also, I have been against gambling in our great state for more than 20 years because it is of NO value to the economy as well as the morals of society.
We claim to care about the well-being of our citizens and want to afford to them all they need to live productive live, but gambling only steals from society. Few, very few outside of the casino owners ever get any “payoff” from gambling. If our government officials truly care about the citizens of Pennsylvania, they will send the gambling-mongers packing and ban it once and for all in Pennsylvania!

I visited the park on vacation about fifteen years ago, and if this casino is built I wont be back because this is an insult to the memory of those who fought and died there, including a distant cousin of mine.

There is already too much congestion in town with all the tourists. A casino will only add more cars and bus traffic, though it will likely increase business at General Pickett’s Buffet and McDonald’s!

I am newsletter editor for the Lake County (Illinois) Civil War Roundtable and have put an article on No Casino Gettysburg in this month’s newsletter. (I’ll try to attach a copy.) We share our newsletter with other roundtables in Northern Illinois (including McHenry and Chicago) so you can hopefully expect others to do the same.

WOULD YOU PUT A CASINO IN THE SENATE BUILDING, OR THE WHITE HOUSE??? HOW ABOUT ARLINGTON CEMETERY???
GETTYSBURG IS JUST AS REVERED…THERE ARE BILLIONS OF OTHER ACRES WHERE A CASINO CAN BE PLACED WITHOUT DESECRATING THE MEMORIES OF SOLDIERS KILLED, AND IN SOME CASES, THE BURIAL GROUND OF AMERICAN PATRIOTS.

I love the area and would not want anything that would detract from the scenery to be placed here buts lets be realistic, the location that they are considering would not detract from any of our historic sites. More likely that the casino would bring more day visitors into the area for a before or after visits.
I understand that there are people fundamentally opposed to casinos but from the perspective of a local I really do not fear that it will have any ill effects on our sacred ground.
The people who enjoy that type of entertainment will enjoy it either way, why not keep some our money-and others money here?

We actually live here. A casino would cause us to consider a move from the area.

I am actually a resident of Biglerville, which is only about 7 miles from Gettysburg, and therefore might not count as a visitor. However, I would seriously consider moving away from the Gettysburg area should a casino be built here, nor would I be so likely to encourage friends from other places to visit the Gettysburg battlefield.

Please NO casino on or near hollowed ground. You don’t REALY need the money.I mean realy!!!!!!

A Casino located in Gettysburg is most inappropriate. The jobs argument would apply to any quasi legal activity. Perhaps hire an escort or murder incorporated would provide jobs also. The promised jobs can be deducted from the employment already in place here.

A casino does not belong anywhere near Gettysburg. It would not be supported when we visit the historic battlefield.

Casino’s would make me reconsider my yearly pilgranage to gettysburg.
