I am responding to Robert Boyer’s letter in the Gettysburg Times, March 29, concerning the proposed Gettysburg casino. Mr. Boyer states that “Mr. LeVan has always made his intentions known, and never attempted to deceive anyone concerning this project.” Let’s look a little closer.
If one were to open either a Gettysburg telephone book or the 2010 Gettysburg Official Visitors Guide or the free tourist guidebook Gettysburg Experience and look at the map of Gettysburg, you will see that they all show the entire Gettysburg National Military Park in a darker color than the rest of the map. Now, let’s go to the map of Gettysburg on Mr. LeVan’s Mason-Dixon Gaming and Resort Web site. His map clearly shows the location of the proposed casino along the Emmitsburg Road, but guess what! There is no Gettysburg National Military Park on his map even though it is only one-half mile away! He has succeeded in making 6,000 acres simply disappear! This has been done purposely to convince anyone who looks at the Mason-Dixon website into thinking that the casino is nowhere near the battlefield. Why doesn’t Mr. LeVan want anyone to know how close his proposed casino will be to the battlefield? Why is he going to such lengths to hide this information? Because he knows that “proximity to the Battlefield” was one of the reasons that his 2006 application was denied by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board, so the less light shed on the fact that this location is even closer, the better. But the people who respect that battlefield know that it is there, and we will constantly remind the members of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board that it is there, and they will act accordingly. Is “never attempted to deceive anyone concerning this project” a believable statement?
